In 2020 the SOMOS Foundation co-developed Safe Beach Patrols to ensure the security and well-being of residents and visitors by providing crime prevention, basic water rescue, and first response activities for visitors to Uvita Beach, Marino Ballena National Park (PNMB) commonly referred to as the Whales Tail. Led by the Uvita Integral Development Association (ADIU) for over four years, SafeBeach relied on financial contributions from 23 local businesses, SOMOS, and residents of the coastal communities of Baha and Uvita.
From the period January 1 to March 20, 2020, SafeBeach Patrols recorded 303 preventions and no crimes in the Whales Tail sector during Patrol hours. The majority of preventions consisted of neglected bags and private possessions left on the beach and in cars. Patrollers also recovered personal documents and collaborated with MINAE, SINAC, and the Fuerza Publica (Police) in the arrest of suspicious individuals operating between the Whales Tail and Morete River, the most problematic sector of the beach. Safe Beach Patrols were temporarily suspended on March 20, due to COVID-19 national emergency measures.
