Costa Ballena Lifeguards
This ground-breaking public-private partnership with the Municipality of Osa and the National Coastguard formalized an existing non-formal association, the Costa Ballena Lifeguards, that trains, manages and operates lifeguard services in the Costa Ballena region from Dominical to Playa Hermosa.

Creating Safe Beach Patrols
In 2020 the SOMOS Foundation co-developed Safe Beach Patrols to ensure the security and well-being of residents and visitors by providing crime prevention, basic water rescue, and first response activities for visitors to Uvita Beach, Marino Ballena National Park (PNMB) commonly referred to as the Whales Tail.

In 2022, SOMOS brought together community leaders and organizations to address the community needs to organize, strategize, and implement community safety plans.

Investing in Public Schools
After the pandemic, Public Schools nationwide suffered a delay in the maintenance of their infrastructure, furniture, equipment, and educational materials. Recognizing the importance of education, SOMOS set the goal of intervening in 5 schools in the Bahía Ballena district.

Reopening of the Marino Ballena National Park
On March 18th, 2020, Costa Rica declared a state of emergency and closed its borders to international visitors. Days later, the beaches and national parks also closed to the public. SOMOS worked on a plan to re-open the park and help bolster the local economy and job creation.
