SOMOS 1% PLEDGE PROGRAM

Encourages philanthropic giving from local businesses (1% of revenue) and their customers (donors), creating a culture of recognition and support for nonprofit efforts in our communities.

LIFEGUARDS COSTA BALLENA

Thanks to the public-private partnerships facilitated by SOMOS in collaboration with the Municipality of Osa, the Lifeguards of Costa Ballena are capable of 1,398 preventions, 8 medical assistance for cuts and bruises, 10 stings and 7 rescues in the water between December 15 and March 15 in Playa Dominical and Playa Hermosa. Between March 15 and October 30, 2020, Costa Ballena lifeguards reported 1,239 preventions; five medical aids for stingray stings or medical aids for cuts and bruises; and 8 water rescues in Playa Dominical and Playa Hermosa.

MANAGEMENT OF COSTA BALLENA FUND

Environmental citizen science, coral reef reforestation, and monitoring of inland aquatic ecosystems in the Paso de la Danta Biological Corridor are supported by SOMOS. In addition to providing financial support, SOMOS has been facilitating partnerships with the private sector and coordinating volunteers and training to further support these efforts.

SOMOS EXECUTES STANFORD UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP

The English Language and Leadership camp connects business training, ecological awareness, environmental conservation and leadership for at-risk youth in the communities of Bahía Ballena and Puerto Jiménez. Due to the Covid-19 emergency, SOMOS has to shift the program to virtual and digital.

FLOOD & DISASTER RELIEF

In response to the COVID-19 emergency, SOMOS and Uvita Town Council (ADIU) develop a cohesive emergency assistance program that was implemented to deliver essential food and supplies to those most affected. Delivering 752 packages of food and supplies and 90 gas cylinders that represent approximately $40,000 USD in direct aid to families residing in Costa Ballena.

REOPENING OF THE MARINO BALLENA NATIONAL PARK (ECONOMIC ENGINE)

For the third quarter after COVID-19, the SOMOS foundation began collaborating with community organizations such as the Uvita Town Council (ADIU), Tour Operators of the Marino Ballena National Park (ASOTU), and community leaders to reopen the main driver of tourism in our community: the Marino Ballena National Park.

Together we are able to open PUNTA UVITA ENTRANCE: SOMOS contributed $3,000 USD towards the reopening of this popular entry point and later the ENTRANCE TO COLONIA: - $1104.12 USD collected by ADI Uvita -$2,000 USD from the SOMOS Foundation - More than 4500 hours of volunteer work was executed.
